The aim of a drug rehabilitation center is to help people get back to a level of normality in their lives and re-enter the community. Drug addiction effects all aspects of a person’s life including their family relationships, work and social interactions. During their stay at a drug rehabilitation center the client will receive treatment in a safe and secure environment to help prepare them to live a healthy life going forward.

There are many different types of drug rehabilitation centers and these centers are run by the government, not for profit organisations and private businesses. They also offer a wide range of services and programs. Some of these drug rehabilitation centers offer drug specific programs. For instance they might specialise in the treatment of addiction to heroin or methamphetamines while others will offer a broader range of services and programs. Sone drug rehabilitation centers might be gender specific or age specific in the type of clients they treat.

Attendance at drug rehabilitation centre is not compulsory unless it’s by way of a court order and clients are free to leave at any time. One of the underlying reasons why clients are free to leave at any time is that for treatment to be successful the client must actually want to participate in the program and get well.

There are a wide variety of residential rehab centers ranging from very basic accommodation to luxury owned private facilities. The level of luxury at a drug rehabilitation center is not always a good guide to the standard of the treatment being delivered.  Luxury does not necessarily mean best. Further, the level of accommodation required for one particular client maybe very different to the needs of another client even though they might come from the same socio economic background. The selection of the most appropriate drug rehabilitation center should be made on all of the facts pertaining to the client’s needs.

Drug rehabilitation centres offer a variety of treatment models and programs both residential and outpatient.

Outpatient programs often include individual counselling both short and long term and also support for non- residential detoxing. One of the key factors in deciding on which drug rehabilitation center is the most appropriate is how they detox a client and whether they  use pharmacotherapy in the detox.

Therapeutic day rehab is a non-residential treatment option that offers an intensive structured program over a period of weeks, which includes both counselling and a range of other elements designed to build life skills and promote general wellbeing, such as financial management and nutrition.

Well over 50% of the residential drug rehabilitation centers deliver programs based on the 12 step facilitation model and deliver their programs via the Therapeutic Community model.

Finally another key feature of both residential and non-residential programs is the preparation of the client’s after care plan. The long term success of any program designed to help and assist a person deal with their drug abuse is the creation of a long term maintenance plan which the client has helped prepare and which they believe they are capable of implementing.
