I have never been comfortable with Alcohol Rehabs and Drug Rehabs who offer a 30 program or a 60 day program or a 90 day program.

Many parents look at their child and see how bad their condition is, believe more is better and immediately gravitate to the 90 day program. Over the years I have had parents say to me my child needs extensive long term care and my response is always “You may be right but we will not know until they commence treatment and we see how they progress.”

I cannot understand why it has to be 30, 60 or 90 days. Why isn’t it 26, 37 or 124 days!!!!!. How can anyone assess the progress of a client prior to them commencing treatment. Yes there is always a need for a period of abstinence following the detox, but there are number of variables that will interact with the client’s treatment pathway and influence the speed with which they gravitate and respond to the treatment. For example,

  • The length of time they spent drinking or using
  • The quantity and frequency of their using.
  • Have they had previous alcohol rehabs or drug rehabs.
  • Do they have other mental health issues.
  • Their age.
  • Work commitments.
  • Family structure or lack of.
  • At what stage in the Cycle of Change were they when they entered treatment.
  • The quality of their family or personal relationships.
  • Their financial situation.
  • The quality of the treatment programs and the staff
  • Etc etc etc

Every client’s situation regarding all of the above variables is different and the length of treatment they will require will be determined not by the 30, 60, 90 day program but by how all of these variables interact during the treatment.

What the facilities offering 30, 60, 90 day programs are in fact offering is repetition and length of abstinence and while this is perfect for some clients and just what they need, it is not perfect for other clients and can have a negative impact on their quest for recovery.

At 21Renew we take a very different approach. The program is not just the residential stay. The program encompasses three stages;

  1. Pre Residential
  2. Residential
  3. Post Residential. In this stage each client receives their own personal Recovery Coach and the length of time they require their Recovery Coach is continually reviewed in conjunction with the client.
